Historical Sketch of Zion Grove Baptist Church

Zion Grove Baptist Church was organized July 8, 1913 by a group of dedicated Christians. The place was under a big Oak Tree in the back yard of the first mother of the church. Rev. Will Morris presided during the organizational meeting and election of officers. The first Pastor was Rev. W.M. Hampton. The first place of worship was a one room house, a few doors up the street from where the church was organized. The church saw much growth in membership and auxiliaries to carry on the church program during the years from 1913 to 1932. Five pastors served during these years.

In 1932, under the Pasturage of Rev. J.C. Alexander, the church was moved to 446 Stonewall Street in Atlanta, Georgia. After the move, a great event happened. Rev. W.M. Wilson, pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church with his few members, along with Rev. Alexander, decided to merge and become one church. The name of the church would be The Zion Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Alexander serving as pastor. The church continued its growth Rev. Alexander served in the vineyard for 14 years before moving to another church.

In 1946, Rev. J.H. Lockett accepted the pastoral calling from Zion Grove. He began working right away to strengthen our fellowship. More members were added and soon a larger place for worship was needed. In 1959 Rev. Lockett moved the Church and congregation to its current location, 606 Pryor Street . Our growth continued under his leadership. He served until 1968.

In April 1969, Rev. H.D. Freeman was called to pastor Zion Grove. Under his leadership, and with the help of God, the church has continued its progress. New members have been added to our rolls, more auxiliaries have been formed, new Deacons ordained, Ministers licensed, vans purchased, air conditioning installed, a lift for getting the handicapped into the building and improvements within the church completed. Under Rev. Freeman’s leadership, we have now embarked upon our next journey, a new place to worship. We know that through God all things are possible.
